Saskia hovered next to the vet, who had finally arrived. He was giving medication to baby Themba.

“What’s wrong?” she asked the boys when she saw their alarmed faces. Ice couldn’t bring himself to tell her that there had been another rhino killing. Jabu looked at his feet.

“Frank had to go and help Joseph with something,” said Ice, biting his bottom lip. He couldn’t bear to see her crying again and thought it would be better if her husband told her the news later.

“So he’s asked us to feed the animals,” added Jabu.

“I see. Well the instructions are on that chalkboard. All the food is in labelled containers in the fridge and cupboards over there,” she said pointing. “It would have been better if I’d shown you, but I need to stay with the vet and help with Themba,” she explained. She handed them a set of keys. “You’ll have to figure these out.”

“That’s okay, we’ve got this,” said Ice.

They took a moment to read the instructions to work out what each animal needed.

“We’ll have to make a few trips back to the garage for food hey?” suggested Jabu. They wouldn’t be able to carry much. Ice put a litre of milk on his lap and wheeled out, and Jabu carried a bucket of grass pellets. Ice felt like a zookeeper.

“It’s good to be able to help out,” he said, wheeling along with purpose.
